Office of Wastewater Management (OWM), which oversees a variety of federal programs designed and instituted to ensure and contribute to the well-being of the waters and watersheds of the U.S. The OWM promotes compliance with the requirements of the Federal Water Pollution Control Act. Wastewater, by definition, is any water that has been adversely affected in quality by a so-called anthropogenic (human-produced) influence. Among the wastewater produced daily in the U.S. are various contaminants that are removed from industrial and agricultural plants and properties, homes and commercial properties. Common wastewater includes ingress of non-potable seawater, sewage, rainfall that collects and gathers bacteria and other contaminents, highway drainage, industrial site drainage, and a variety of others. The vast majority of wastewater is treated in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), which typically includes a physical and chemical treatment process. In rural areas not served by public utilities and sewerage, septic tanks are used to hold and treat wastewater.
